Recycling on campus is a win for all

Thanks to a grant funded by Ramsey County, Episcopal Homes is partnering with BizRecyling to improve recycling around campus and to reduce waste. The new program includes a variety of changes that will make it easier for everyone to understand what can be recycled and how to do it. The Bistro and Episcopal Church Home (ECH) Café and Kitchen will be the main focus as they have the highest volume of food and use of to-go containers.

In the coming months, new receptacles will be placed around campus that better suit the types of food containers currently used. Reusable dishes will be used for food that is eaten in versus taken out of the café and bistro. Additionally, food composting will be introduced as a part of the “food to hogs” program. Food prep scraps and uneaten food from our large dining kitchens will be turned into food for livestock on a local farm.

“Less waste will be going into landfills, we will be supporting a local food system and improving how we recycle,” says Lindsay Becker, Manager of Midway Pointe. “It is a win for all.”

Upcoming staff trainings will take place so that everyone can be a part of the solution ensuring the success of this new program.

Thank you to Lindsay Becker, Manager of Midway Pointe; Avanel Jarka, Director of Housekeeping; Joyce Kirkeide, Director of Culinary Services and Mark Ladwig, Plant Operations Director & CIO for their involvement in securing stronger recycling practices for our campus.
